In response to the removal of the historic Caesar Rodney statue from Rodney Square in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 12, 2020, the Caesar Rodney Institute (CRI) launched CaesarRodney250. This initiative honors Caesar Rodney's legacy by celebrating his pivotal role in American history, including securing the unanimous vote for the Declaration of Independence, serving in the Revolutionary War, and contributing to the passage of the U.S. Constitution.
Caesar Rodney’s midnight ride to Philadelphia was a defining moment in the creation of the United States. On a stormy night, Rodney undertook a grueling 80-mile journey from Dover, DE, to Philadelphia, PA, to ensure Delaware’s vote for independence. Despite illness and exhaustion, Rodney arrived just in time to cast Delaware’s deciding vote for independence, breaking the deadlock among his state’s delegation. His courageous act ensured Delaware joined the unanimous decision for independence, a critical step in presenting unity among the colonies—a moment that shaped America and world history.
The removal of Rodney’s statue, a longstanding symbol of courage and leadership, has sparked renewed efforts to raise public awareness about his contributions. Despite promises of public dialogue regarding the statue’s future, no such discussion has occurred. The statue remains in storage, with no plans for reinstatement, contrary to earlier assurances.
As the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches in 2026, the CaesarRodney250 initiative holds particular significance. It seeks to reaffirm the principles and values that shaped America’s founding while highlighting Caesar Rodney’s inclusion in the National Statuary Hall—a testament to his national recognition and enduring legacy.
Through community events and public engagement efforts, CaesarRodney250 aims to deepen public understanding of Rodney’s achievements and contributions to Delaware and American history. By fostering appreciation for his role in shaping our nation’s foundation, the initiative also advocates for reinstating the statue in Rodney Square.
CaesarRodney250 is not just about reinstating a statue; it’s about revitalizing public knowledge and appreciation for Caesar Rodney’s profound impact on Delaware’s history and America’s founding principles.
By educating the public and advocating for the statue’s reinstatement, the CaesarRodney250 initiative seeks to inspire civic pride and deepen appreciation for Rodney’s historical legacy.
CaesarRodney250 is an initiative of the Caesar Rodney Institute (CRI). CRI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, nonpartisan, public policy research organization in Delaware. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. To donate to this initiative, please CLICK HERE.
